- Low Tide and High Tide: Everything You Need to Know About Tides
For any sea lover, understanding the phenomenon of tides is essential, especially in nautical or fishing activities. Low tide and high tide, terms that describe the phases of low and high tide, affect the water level and, therefore, the safety and accessibility of boats. In this post, we explain what they are, how they occur and how they can influence your voyages. What are low tide and high tide? Low tide : This is the moment when the water level is at its lowest point, leaving a larger expanse of beach or coast exposed. This phenomenon occurs due to the force of attraction of the Moon and the Sun on the Earth, together with the Earth's rotational movement. High tide : This is when the water level reaches its highest point, covering a large part of the coast and reducing the amount of visible beach. As with low tide, high tide is the result of the interaction between the gravity of the Moon and the Sun and the rotational movement. Both events occur twice a day, approximately every 12 hours, in a regular cycle that can vary slightly depending on factors such as the lunar position and the Sun's proximity to the Earth. How do low and high tides affect navigation? The tide significantly influences water conditions, affecting navigation, fishing and other nautical activities. Accessibility in Ports : During low tide, some areas of ports may become impassable for larger vessels due to the shallower water. High tide, on the other hand, makes these areas easier to access by raising the water level. Currents and Speed : The difference in level between low and high tide creates currents, which can be helpful or hindering depending on the direction in which you are sailing. In areas where the tidal change is pronounced, these currents can significantly influence the speed of the boat. Coastal Navigation : On shallow coasts, low tide can expose rocks and other obstacles that can endanger vessels. Planning your voyage with tide times in mind is essential to avoid running aground in these areas. How are Tides Predicted? Tide prediction is made possible by accurate astronomical calculations of the positions of the Moon and Sun relative to the Earth. Tide charts and mobile navigation apps can show exact times of low and high tide for each day, making it easier to plan your nautical activities. Some useful tools for tide prediction include: Tide tables : Available at many ports and websites, these indicate tide times and levels for each day in a specific area. Navigation Apps : Mobile apps like Navionics or Tides Near Me allow you to check tides in real time and often offer tide change alerts. Curiosities about Low Tide and High Tide Spring and neap tides : During the new moon and the full moon, spring tides occur, which have the greatest amplitude (greater difference between low tide and high tide). Neap tides, with a smaller amplitude, occur during the waxing and waning quarters. Effect on ecosystems : Tides also influence marine fauna, especially in coastal and mangrove ecosystems, as they regulate the access of species to different areas depending on the depth of the water. Understanding low and high tide will not only help you navigate more safely, but also help you appreciate the impact of this natural phenomenon on the sea and its coasts. Make sure to check the tide times before heading out on the water and take advantage of the conditions to your advantage for trouble-free navigation.
